๐จ ALERT โ Severe Flooding Devastates Homes and Churches in Uyo, Nigeria, as Families Trapped and Displaced
Date: July 9, 2026 Location: Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Reporting Agency: VPP
Catastrophic flooding struck the city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, overnight following several hours of heavy rainfall, displacing dozens of families, flooding churches, and destroying household property across multiple neighborhoods. A VPP correspondent on the ground personally visited affected residents and confirmed the destruction firsthand.
Among those affected, Mrs. Comfort Ekpenyong Akpan, an elderly widow from Odiok Itam village, was found weeping as floodwater poured through a section of her unfinished home. She has no family to fall back on. The Church of Christ on Abak Road sustained severe damage after floodwater breached its perimeter fence and inundated the church compound, leaving the resident pastor and his family trapped inside for several hours. Multiple residential properties on Aka Road, Abak Road, and Offot Street were flooded, with belongings destroyed and families left without safe shelter.
Residents say this is the worst flooding the city has experienced, with water reaching living rooms and bedrooms for the first time. They attribute the crisis to deteriorating roads and an inadequate drainage infrastructure that successive administrations have failed to address. Affected families are appealing urgently to the Akwa Ibom State Government for immediate relief and a lasting solution.
