🚨 PERSECUTED CHURCH ALERT — Four Female University Students Dragged from Their Homes in Overnight West Bank Raids as Detention of Palestinian Women Rises

Yesterday before dawn, Israeli forces conducted overnight raids across the Ramallah area and detained four female students from Birzeit University. The detainees were identified as Jolan Abu Awwad, seized after Israeli soldiers stormed student housing in Birzeit, north of Ramallah; Sama Safi, taken from her family home in Ramallah; and Leila Na’el Khalil, forcibly removed from her home. A fourth student, Natalie Abu Diya, was also arrested after forces raided and searched her home in the town of Birzeit. No charges have been publicly filed against any of the four. Their families have received little information about where they are being held or why.
The Palestinian Prisoner Society confirmed the arrests were part of a broader overnight operation in which at least 35 Palestinians were detained across the West Bank. The four student arrests brought the total number of Palestinian women currently held in Israeli custody to 89. That figure includes three minors, three pregnant women, 19 administrative detainees, and two women suffering from cancer. Most are held at Damon Prison in northern Israel.
These aren’t the first attacks targeting students. Between October 2023 and December 2025, the Israeli military killed 37 university students and injured 259 others in the West Bank. It also detained 463 university students — 148 of whom are from Birzeit University — and 27 higher education staff, most held under administrative detention. On January 6, 2026, Israeli military vehicles stormed the Birzeit campus with more than 8,000 students present, breaking through the main gate and firing indiscriminately, injuring 42 people. That raid was the 26th Israeli military incursion into Birzeit University since 2002. UN human rights experts responded to that raid by stating that Israel’s assault on Palestinian higher education is “not episodic violence but a systematic policy,” describing raids, arrests, and the criminalization of student life as tools designed to undermine the right to education.
Raids since October 2023 have targeted Birzeit, Al-Quds, Hebron, An-Najah, and Palestine Polytechnic Universities, among others — sometimes in broad daylight, with soldiers firing tear gas and stun grenades among students. The stated Israeli pretext is consistently the same: student activities constituting incitement. The pattern is also consistent: young Palestinians pursuing education are removed from their homes, their campuses, and their futures, held without charge under administrative detention orders that require no trial and no evidence presented in open court.
What This Signals
Taking four young women from their beds before dawn and providing their families no information about charges or location is not a security operation. It is a message. Human rights observers have noted that these policies appear designed to make life unbearable and to push Palestinians toward leaving their homeland. The targeting of Birzeit University — one of the most prestigious Palestinian academic institutions, with deep ties to Palestinian Christian intellectual and civic life — is not incidental. Education represents continuity, identity, and future. Dismantling it, student by student, raid by raid, is a strategy. With 89 Palestinian women now in Israeli detention, including minors, pregnant women, and cancer patients, the detention apparatus has expanded far beyond any definition of security necessity. It is collective punishment applied to an entire generation.
